Indigitech Bridging the Digital Divide in New Zealand’s Education Sector

Provide equitable access for Māori and Pacific Island students in STEM education and digital learning, and over time, see increased diversity in New Zealand’s tech sector—doubling the representation from Māori and Pasifika. The program addresses New Zealand’s critical need for 4,000–5,000 new digital technology professionals annually and tackles the underrepresentation of Māori (4%) and Pasifika (2.8%) in tech roles. Indigitech supports schools with digital curriculum access, teachers with professional development, and students with coding camps and tech activities—ultimately aiming to create a more diverse and inclusive tech workforce.

The program’s governance was maintained through regular Steer-Co meetings, coordinating between delivery partners Code Avengers, Education Perfect, Lancom, and AWS. This structured approach was chosen to address systemic barriers to tech education, provide comprehensive support, and create sustainable pathways for Māori and Pasifika students into tech careers, while building a scalable model for future growth.
