Sydney, 11th February 2025: While some politicians are more fired up about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) than the cost of a Bunnings sausage sizzle, we’re here to remind everyone that DEI isn’t a political football—it’s the foundation of stronger workplaces, better innovation, and a more representative tech workforce.
Globally, DEI initiatives are under attack. In the US, major corporations are quietly axing their programs, and closer to home, certain voices are questioning its value. But in Australia, we’re not hitting pause—we’re hitting fast forward.
That’s why, in our 10th Anniversary year, the TechDiversity Awards 2025 is putting out the call to the real changemakers—the individuals and organisations that aren’t just talking about inclusion but embedding it into the DNA of their workplaces, policies, and initiatives.
This year’s theme, “Framing DEI Futures,” reflects the reality that meaningful change isn’t driven by one leader, one initiative, or one department. It’s about many voices, many actions, and many pieces coming together to shape a more inclusive, innovative tech workforce.
“Rhetoric has always been present in discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, the current political climate has amplified these conversations and made them more visible. The sound bites may be getting louder, but what opponents fail to recognise is that there’s an equally strong—if not stronger—force of DEI advocates ready to respond”, Soozey Johnstone, Co-founder & Chair, TechDiversity.
Soozey emphasises “We’re not retreating in the face of opposition; instead, we’re intensifying our commitment to creating a more inclusive society. This isn’t a moment of retreat, but one of renewed determination and action.”
While some critics try to lump DEI into the so-called “woke agenda,” the reality is far simpler—DEI is about ensuring businesses tap into the full potential of our diverse society. It’s not a trend, it’s a business imperative. As companies struggle with talent shortages and evolving workplace expectations, DEI is proving to be the difference between those that stagnate and those that innovate, Stacey Hutchinson, Operations Director, TechDiversity cuts through the noise with a straight-shooting perspective:
“Woke has nothing to do with DEI. It’s about levelling the playing field so everyone has a fair go—giving people the opportunity to contribute to Australia’s thriving tech workforce, supporting their well-being, and ultimately helping our economy grow.”
The 2025 Categories: Recognising Excellence in DEI

Dr Annie McAuley, Founder & CEO of TalkiPlay, 2024 TechDiversity Awards Champion
Over the past decade, the TechDiversity Awards have recognised trailblazers in Australia’s tech workforce, from grassroots organisations to major corporations. This year, we continue to spotlight five key categories:
✅ Government – For public sector initiatives driving systemic change in DEI.
✅ Business – Celebrating corporate-led programs fostering inclusive workplaces.
✅ Education – Honouring institutions and programs shaping the next generation of diverse tech talent.
✅ Campaign of the Year – This category highlights impactful campaigns driving DEI awareness and change, the campaign can be company-wide and not just focused on a technology workforce.
✅ Tech for Good – Showcasing initiatives using technology to create social impact, improve accessibility, drive sustainability, and enhance well-being.
A New Multi-Stage Judging Process
To ensure that every nomination is rigorously assessed, this year’s Awards introduce an enhanced judging process:
🔹 Stage 1: Initial Scoring – A panel of leaders from government, business, tech associations, and academia will individually score each nomination on impact, innovation, and scalability who will select the finalists.
🔹 Stage 2: Judging Panel Review – The finalists will then get a chance to meet with a select group of expert judges who will then assess and decide the winners and merit recipients.
With judges spanning government, tech, recruitment, banking, and DEI leadership, nominees will have their work seen and evaluated by the people shaping Australia’s tech workforce.
More Than Just an Award – A Legacy of Impact
This year, winners and finalists will be showcased in a 10th Anniversary Keepsake Winners’ Booklet—a tangible tribute to a decade of impact, innovation, and progress in DEI.
