TechDiversity is delighted to spotlight impactful programs that align with the Australian government’s goal to create 1.2 million technology-related jobs by 2030.

Recognising the frequent inquiries we receive on designing programs that extend beyond gender diversity, we are encouraged to share the success story of Westpac’s Mob Tech initiative. This program not only supports our mission but also exemplifies how targeted initiatives can significantly influence diversity and inclusion within the tech industry.

Background:

In 2023, Westpac launched the Mob Tech program, a pioneering initiative aimed at creating non-traditional pathways into technology for First Nations individuals. Recognising the need for more inclusive recruitment strategies, Westpac collaborated with Generation Australia to develop this cadetship program, focusing on areas like Cybersecurity, Cloud Technology, Web Development, and Data Analytics.

Program Overview:

Mob Tech is designed to offer comprehensive training and support to individuals from Indigenous backgrounds who have little or no previous experience in tech. Participants are provided with a full-time salary while they undergo 12 to 18 weeks of tailored technology training. After completing the program, cadets are integrated into Westpac’s tech teams, supported by culturally trained team leaders and mentors.

Achievements:

Within just one year, Mob Tech has significantly impacted the lives of its cadets and the broader community. All participants from the pilot cohort have successfully transitioned into ongoing technology roles at Westpac, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in fostering career development and retention. The initiative has been so successful that Westpac decided to double its intake for the 2024 cycle.

Awards and Recognition:

The program’s success was recognised when it received the Women in Banking and Finance Inclusive Workplace Award of the Year. This accolade underscores the program’s contribution towards creating a diverse and inclusive tech industry.

Future Outlook:

Encouraged by the positive outcomes, Westpac remains committed to expanding the Mob Tech program. The initiative is seen as a crucial step towards building a more diverse and inclusive Australian tech sector that not only reflects but also serves its community more effectively.
