Speaking the language: Dementia Australia’s multilingual campaign to support our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse community
Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities may face barriers to accessing dementia support due to language difficulties, cultural stigma and limited awareness of available services. With 28% of Australians living with dementia born in non-English speaking countries, it can be challenging to navigate care systems, leading to delayed diagnosis and care.
The campaign aimed to break down language barriers and reduce the stigma of dementia by providing people with low English proficiency with access to resources in their preferred language – empowering them to navigate their dementia journey with dignity, confidence and culturally appropriate support and services.
